Toepel Announces School Safety Funding for Area Schools
2/26/2020
HARRISBURG – Rep. Marcy Toepel (R-Montgomery) today announced School Safety and Security Grants awarded to schools serving students within the 147th Legislative District. This funding can be used by the schools to enhance security measures in a variety of ways that best suits each district’s needs.

“Ensuring students and teachers have a safe environment in which to learn is vital,” said Toepel. “I was happy to support this funding in the state budget, as school security has become a top priority in recent years. The governor is proposing to cut this important funding in the 2020-21 budget; however, I plan to fight for the continuation of these grants, which direct tax dollars back to our communities.”

Funding is being awarded as follows:

• Boyertown School District - $495,000.
• North Montco Technical Career Center - $150,000
• Perkiomen Valley School District - $45,000.
• Pottsgrove School District - $40,000.
• Souderton School District - $460,437.
• Upper Perkiomen School District - $40,000.
• Western Montgomery Career and Technology Center - $72,994.

A total of $53.7 million in grants were awarded by the School Safety and Security Committee within the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency as part of the School Safety and Security Grant Program, which was created by lawmakers in 2018.

Funding included $18.7 million for meritorious grants. Meritorious grants range from $30,000-$45,000 based upon average daily student attendance of the school district.

The grant program funding also included $33.8 million in competitive grants that were made available for certain eligible school entities. Boyertown School District, Souderton School District, North Montco Technical Career Center and Western Montgomery Career and Technology Center received competitive grants.

In total, 496 school districts received the meritorious grant and 134 applicants received the competitive grant.
