GILBERTSVILLE – To address residents’ safety concerns, Rep. Marcy Toepel (R-Montgomery) and Sen. Bob Mensch (R-Berks/Bucks/Montgomery) partnered to announce a $125,000 grant awarded through the Multimodal Transportation Fund that will impact New Hanover Township at the intersection of routes 73 and 663.

“New Hanover Township officials have really responded to the safety concerns expressed by many local residents and worked to deliver a meaningful solution,” Toepel said. “I thank them for giving us a great example of the good that can come when people voice their concerns and take an active role in the governmental process.”

A traffic control signal will be installed at the intersection of routes 73 and 663 next to Saldutti Car Corner. That hill will be reprofiled to increase sight distance and widened to put a left-turn lane facing west on Route 73 to turn onto Route 663 at that intersection.

“I’m pleased that New Hanover Township will have the funds to make significant improvements to the intersection of routes 73 and 663 South,” said Mensch. “The improvements will help increase efficiency in the operations of the intersection and help prevent delays for commuters. It will also greatly increase the safety of the intersection and dramatically improve the vehicle sight distance. I applaud New Hanover Township for taking the steps to help improve the safety of this intersection for motorists.”

The Multimodal Transportation Fund was created by Act 89, Pennsylvania’s far-reaching transportation funding plan that was enacted in November 2013. For the first time, transit, aviation, rail freight, pedestrian and bicycle modes obtained dedicated sources of funds, putting the modes on a firmer footing for future initiatives.
