Public Hearing Scheduled on Water Rate Increase Request

Rep. Marcy Toepel (R-Montgomery) has announced that the state Public Utility Commission (PUC) will hold a public hearing in Montgomery County on the water rate increase request by the Pennsylvania American Water Co.

The PUC will conduct the hearing on Thursday, July 28, at 1:30 p.m. at the Montgomery County Courthouse, Airy and Swede Streets, in Norristown.

“If you are a customer of the Pennsylvania American Water Co., this is your opportunity to be heard,” Toepel said.  “I encourage everyone to take part.”

Pennsylvania American Water Co. filed an application with the PUC requesting a $6.42 a month increase in rates for a typical residential customer. The company’s request would bring a typical monthly residential water bill, using 4,150 gallons per month, to $54.87, keeping the cost of tap water for most households at approximately one cent per gallon.

The utility wants the increase to fund $533 million in system improvements.  These capital investments include upgrades to water treatment facilities, storage tanks, wells and pumping stations.
