Toepel Appointed Deputy House Majority Whip
HARRISBURG – Pennsylvania House Majority Whip Stan Saylor (R-York) has appointed Rep. Marcy Toepel (R-Montgomery) as a deputy House majority whip for the 2013-14 legislative session.

“I am grateful to Representative Saylor for trusting me with this responsibility, and I am honored to accept,” said Toepel. “The relationships that I have built during my time in the Legislature will help me relate to my fellow colleagues and unite the party for the common cause of putting Pennsylvania taxpayers first.”

Deputy whips have a variety of responsibilities on the House floor, including assisting with member head counts and helping to promote certain tough issues facing the House Republican Caucus. They also keep Saylor informed about problems that members may have, or issues that might have an effect on the legislative agenda and on the caucus as a whole.

The term “whip” is a carryover from the old English parliament, and their job is to whip up support or whip up votes. Deputy whips receive special briefings on legislative issues, providing them with a better breadth of knowledge.

“I am pleased Representative Toepel has agreed to serve in this position,” Saylor said. “I look forward to a productive legislative session and I expect to work closely with her in this role.”
