Toepel, Mensch Announce Area Safe Schools Grants
HARRISBURG – State Rep. Marcy Toepel (R-Montgomery) and Sen. Bob Mensch (R-Berks/Bucks/Montgomery) today announced the awarding of state grants to boost security in two local school districts.

The legislators said Souderton Area School District will receive $40,000 for the training and compensation of school police officers. Upper Perkiomen School District will receive $14,190 to establish and implement programs to prevent and reduce violent incidents.

“A safe and secure learning environment is vital for educating students,” said Mensch. “I am happy to join Rep. Toepel in announcing this state assistance to help these school districts keep students and teachers safe and allow them to focus on learning.”

“Souderton and Upper Perkiomen school districts have demonstrated our intention of how the funding should be used, which is in a manner that each school district determines would be most beneficial,” Toepel said. “By making those decisions at the local level, each district has the power to choose if it would be better to employ an officer to oversee safety, make security enhancements to the building or create a program to prevent incidents. School districts don’t have to conform to a state-mandated cookie-cutter approach that may not work for them.”

The funds were awarded by the Pennsylvania Department of Education through the competitive Safe Schools Targeted Grant Program. The initiative supports local efforts to prevent and reduce violent incidents in schools, purchase safety and security-related equipment, and provide the training and compensation of school resource officers and school police officers.
